Air conditioning units cost a lot of money to run on a daily basis. You want to be comfortable, but you don’t want to throw money down the drain, so it’s important that your unit is running efficiently. We’re going to look at some of the big problems people come up against, because if you know what to look out for you will know when something is wrong. This will mean you save a lot of money, plus you’ll stay comfortable at the same time.

Thermal expansion valve problems

You need to think about how an air conditioning unit knows how hard it must work. The TXV (thermal expansion value) is like a little needle and it moves back and forth which tells the AC unit how much cooling or heating is needed. If this doesn’t work it means your room will probably be too hot or too cold. Your energy bills could be sky high even though your AC unit isn’t working too hard, so it’s something to keep an eye on.

It’s getting old

AC units are a little like animals. They might die suddenly during the course of their lifetime, but it’s much more likely they will stop working properly as they get older. If you’ve had yours for a number of years it might be time to accept you need to get a new one. It’s only going to cost you more money on the long-run because they work so inefficiently. They usually last between 7 and 10 years, so you will know when your one should be getting ready to fall apart.

The coils are dirty

Do you actually know how an air conditioning unit works? Some people are under the impression they add cool air into a room, but that is only half of the battle. It first has to suck in the hot air before cooling it and blowing it back out. In order for it to absorb heat it’s essential that your coils are clean, because if they’re too dirty the AC unit won’t do its job properly. They need to be cleaned or changed regularly in order for it to operate efficiently.

The condenser fan is broken

Now that you know about the coils you should also know about the fan. After the AC unit has absorbed the heat it will need to blow the cold air back out. If the fan isn’t working properly this is obviously going to cause problems and your unit will overheat. If the cold air can’t pass out in an efficient manor you will need to take out a second mortgage because your energy bills will be a lot bigger than usual. You will also be uncomfortable because your room won’t be cool enough.

Your duct is leaking air

If you’ve ever wondered what wastes the most energy inside homes you now have your answer. The ducting you have at the moment could be leaking air somewhere and it’s very hard to find out where it’s coming from. Because duct work isn’t regulated it’s easy to find terrible workmanship wherever you go. If you find a leak you will need to repair it with special duct tape, or you can call out a professional to fix it properly for you.

What will you do now?

Now that you know what can go wrong with the air conditioning inside your home you will be able to spot any problems. Maybe you will faint when you open your next bill. You might just need to leave the room because it’s far too hot and it won’t get any cooler. If you call someone out they should be able to deal with your problem pretty easily, so you have nothing to worry about unless it’s too old and you need to spend money on a new one.
